Garota
The Garota is one of the symbols of the Empordà. Its intense flavor and organic, symmetrical shape make it unique and special. Its shell is one of the little treasures you find in the sea when you are little and that you take home as a souvenir. My engarotes want to be that jeweled memory - a piece of sea made silver.
They call it differently in each coastal town: engarota, garota, garoina, eriç, uriç, bogamarí … The sea urchin has as many names as it has looks. I don't know if it happens in other places, but they tell me that in Cadaqués, the shell has different names if it's the prick with spikes or without. They even make differences for the female (grota), the male, smaller and with larger spikes (devil), or just the shell, without spikes, generally green, called grotinya.
